About

I’m Bob Doherty and I have been teaching English in Japan for over 30 years. I wanted to share the numerous points and techniques that I’ve picked up over the years by creating a website, and thus English School Japan was created with the help of a coworker and several close friends.

I was born and raised in the Kansas side of Kansas City, and had had an interest in English starting from a very young age. As soon as it became available, I would watch all of my television programs with closed captioning active. I was an early adopter of laserdisc, as I loved having the ability to read the subtitles while hearing the spoken word, and catching slight differences between the two. This love of English carried over into my time in university at KSU where I set up the English School America club to help teach foreign exchange students.

Throughout my years, I have had the pleasure of working in a variety of locations and under different circumstances, experiencing the boom and bust created by the bubble economy, helping in universities, managing my own private school, and working in several of the leading English conversation schools. After so many years, very little manages to take me by surprise anymore.

Whether you need help with the finer points of the English language, or advice on dealing with difficult classroom situations, or even just need ideas for activities, English School Japan will have the knowledge you are looking for. If not, feel free to post in our forums, and we’ll do our best to help you out.
